An Arangetram (or Rangapravesam) is a momentous occasion in any performer's life. It marks the completion of their training in the basics of an art form. For a dancer, the Arangetram is a two- to three-hour solo performance, accompanied by a live orchestra, in which the dancer demonstrates her proficiency in all the items of a dance margam or repertoire, as well as her skill in story-telling and acting. To complete an Arangetram, the dancer undergoes rigorous training for months, selecting, learning, and perfecting her items. This dance debut is akin to a high school graduation, after which the dancer can continue her education, and begin choreographing, teaching, and directing.
